Virat Kohli Announces Retirement from Test Cricket

Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli has officially retired from Test cricket, bringing to a close a remarkable 14-year journey in the game’s longest and most traditional format. The announcement came via an emotional post on Instagram.

Kohli, who had already stepped away from T20 Internationals after India’s victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup, reflected on his Test career with heartfelt gratitude.

“It’s been 14 years since I first donned the Test whites. I never imagined the path this format would take me on. It has challenged, shaped, and taught me lessons I’ll carry for life,” Kohli wrote.

“There’s a unique intimacy to playing Test cricket — the quiet grind, the long days, and the unseen moments that stay with you. While stepping away is difficult, it feels like the right time. I’ve given my all, and the game has given me more than I ever hoped for,” he added.

“I leave with a heart full of gratitude — for the game, my teammates, and everyone who supported me throughout. I’ll always smile looking back at my Test journey. #269, signing off,” he concluded.

Over his Test career, Kohli played 123 matches, amassing 9,230 runs at an impressive average of 46.85. His record includes 29 centuries and 30 fifties.

As captain, he led India in 68 Tests, elevating the team to the top of the ICC Test rankings and guiding them to the 2021 World Test Championship final. Globally, he stands fourth among Test captains with the most wins—behind Graeme Smith (53), Ricky Ponting (48), and Steve Waugh (41).
