PHC Demands Explanation Over Family’s Blocked CNICs

Petitioners Allege Entire Household’s Identity Cards Suspended

PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) has issued a notice to the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), directing it to submit a response within 14 days regarding a petition challenging the suspension of a family’s Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) and the denial of Form-B issuance for their children.

The case was heard by a bench comprising Justice Ejaz Anwar and Justice Waqar Ahmad, who reviewed the writ petition filed by Taj Bibi and her family.

Advocate Malik Shehbaz Khan, representing the petitioners, stated that Taj Bibi and her four children are citizens of Pakistan. He told the court that the issue began when Taj Bibi’s son, Muhammad Ullah, attempted to obtain a CNIC but was informed that his father, Sher Rehman’s CNIC, had been blocked — which in turn prevented the issuance of his own identity card.

Though Sher Rehman’s CNIC was eventually reactivated and Muhammad Ullah received his CNIC in 2018, problems resurfaced recently. When Taj Bibi applied to renew her CNIC, she was told that not only was her husband’s identity card blocked again, but the CNICs of the entire family had also been suspended.
