For the first time in HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) history, Peshawar Zalmi has failed to reach the playoffs—a historic low that hasn’t gone unnoticed by team owner Javed Afridi.
In a message shared on X (formerly Twitter), Afridi expressed his disappointment following Zalmi’s underwhelming performance in HBL PSL 10, where they secured only four wins from ten matches.
Led by Babar Azam, Zalmi’s playoff hopes were dashed after a must-win, rain-affected match against Lahore Qalandars ended in a 26-run defeat in Rawalpindi.
“This season’s result is painful, but the league continues to be a platform for future national stars,” Afridi wrote. “Big changes are on the way—we’re committed to rebuilding with determination and focus. InshaAllah.”
Zalmi wrapped up their campaign with 8 points and a net run-rate of -0.293, a stark contrast to their consistent record in previous seasons. As 2017 champions and four-time finalists, the team has long been a mainstay in PSL’s knockout rounds.
Despite the setback, Afridi remains optimistic about the future. He reaffirmed his commitment to the team’s revival, pledging to reinvigorate fan engagement through new initiatives, including Fan Parks, dedicated fan zones inside stadiums, and dynamic marketing strategies.
“This is more than just a cricket team—it’s a movement,” Afridi said. “Let’s stand united in supporting all PSL teams and celebrate the spirit of the game.”
With a renewed focus on talent development and organizational overhaul, Afridi has made it clear: Peshawar Zalmi may have stumbled, but they’re far from finished.
