More than a dozen countries have issued strong condemnations after Israeli forces opened fire near a diplomatic convoy visiting the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank on May 21.
The delegation, which included representatives from the European Union, United Kingdom, China, Russia, and several other nations, was on a pre-coordinated visit with the Israeli military. The convoy, made up of about 20 clearly marked vehicles, came under fire while reportedly diverging from a pre-agreed route.
According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), troops fired “warning shots” intended to redirect the convoy, not to cause harm. The Israeli Foreign Ministry claimed the shots were fired “to distance them away.” No injuries were reported.
International Condemnation
Countries around the world reacted sharply to the incident, demanding explanations and investigations from Israel:
- Canada – Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that the Israeli ambassador had been summoned for an explanation:
“We expect a full investigation. What happened is totally unacceptable, one of many unacceptable events occurring in the region.” - United Kingdom – Parliamentary Under-Secretary Hamish Falconer described the attack as “unacceptable”:
“Diplomats must be allowed to carry out their duties safely. A full investigation is essential, and accountability must follow.” - Ireland – Prime Minister Micheál Martin expressed shock:
“I unreservedly condemn this violent and intimidatory act. This behavior must never be normalized.” - Italy – Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called for immediate clarification:
“Threats to diplomats are unacceptable.” - France – Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot confirmed a French diplomat was present during the incident:
“This is unacceptable. We will summon the Israeli ambassador. Full support to our team on the ground.” - Germany – The Federal Foreign Office called the shooting “unprovoked”:
“Diplomats were carrying out legitimate duties with prior coordination. Their presence posed no threat to Israeli security. This demands an immediate investigation.” - Qatar – The Foreign Ministry labeled the incident a violation of international law:
“Firing at a diplomatic mission is a clear breach of international agreements and norms.” - Turkey – The Foreign Ministry condemned the shooting in the “strongest terms”:
“This is further proof of Israel’s disregard for international law and human rights. Such acts endanger lives and undermine inter-state trust.” - Egypt – The Foreign Ministry rejected the attack outright:
“This action violates all diplomatic conventions. We call on Israel to clarify what occurred.”
Additional condemnations came from Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, Jordan, Uruguay, Mexico, Finland, Denmark, and Belgium, underscoring the widespread alarm among the international community.
Diplomatic Ramifications
While no physical harm was caused, the firing incident has drawn attention to the increasingly volatile environment in the West Bank and the rising diplomatic tensions surrounding Israel’s military actions in the region. Many nations emphasized that attacks on diplomatic personnel represent a serious breach of international norms and could have grave implications for regional stability and foreign relations.
