NEW DELHI, June 4 — At least seven people lost their lives in a stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, India, during celebrations for Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title, according to television reports on Wednesday.
Bengaluru clinched the championship by defeating Punjab Kings in Tuesday’s final match.
Thousands of fans, many waving the team’s red flag, crowded the streets leading to the stadium as the victorious cricket team arrived by bus in the evening, footage showed.
After the stampede, visuals captured a policeman carrying an injured spectator to an ambulance, while others attended to a person lying unconscious on the ground.
Unfortunately, stampedes and similar incidents frequently occur in India when large crowds gather, including during major religious festivals.
Earlier this year, a stampede at the Maha Kumbh Hindu festival in January resulted in the deaths of at least 30 people, as millions assembled to bathe in sacred waters on the event’s most auspicious day.
