Portugal Edge Spain on Penalties to Claim Nations League Crown

Ronaldo Scores 138th International Goal in Pivotal Performance

Portugal secured their second UEFA Nations League title on Sunday night, overcoming Spain 5–3 in a penalty shootout after an intense 2–2 draw that extended into extra time. Cristiano Ronaldo, who netted his 138th international goal, played a crucial role in the final before being forced off late due to injury.

The showdown at the Allianz Arena was a thrilling clash between the Iberian neighbors. Spain opened the scoring in the 21st minute through Martin Zubimendi, but Portugal quickly responded as Nuno Mendes finished off a sharp attacking move involving Ronaldo.

Spain regained their advantage before the break when Pedri threaded a perfect pass to Mikel Oyarzabal, who coolly slotted home—continuing his record as a big-game player after his heroics in the previous European Championship final.

Portugal leveled the score again in the second half, with Ronaldo finishing from close range in what would be his final contribution of the night before being substituted due to injury.

With neither side able to find a winner in extra time, the match was decided on penalties. Spain’s Alvaro Morata missed his attempt, and Ruben Neves converted the decisive spot-kick to seal the victory for Portugal.

A visibly emotional Ronaldo, now 40, spoke to Sport TV after the win. “Winning for Portugal is always special,” he said. “I’ve achieved a lot at club level, but this feels different — pure emotion, pure pride. Mission accomplished.”

Spain came into the final unbeaten since March 2023, riding high after a thrilling 5–4 semifinal win over France. Despite a solid performance, they fell short in the shootout. Rising star Lamine Yamal, who had impressed throughout the tournament, was kept quiet for most of the match.

“This was an incredibly close contest,” said Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente. “In the end, it came down to fine margins. Portugal were just a little more precise in the penalties.”
