Pakistan’s FIH Pro League Participation in Jeopardy Amid $2.5 Million Funding Crisis

ISLAMABAD – June 27:
Pakistan’s return to elite international hockey remains uncertain as the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) faces a funding crisis ahead of the upcoming FIH Pro League. With an estimated $2.5 million required to secure participation, the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has yet to confirm financial support, leaving the Green Shirts’ place in the league hanging in the balance.

A crucial meeting between PHF Secretary General Olympian Rana Mujahid and PSB Director General Yasir Pirzada ended without a concrete funding plan. Speaking to the media, Mujahid expressed urgent concern and made an impassioned appeal to Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Army Chief General Asim Munir for intervention.

“The Pro League expenses are huge. We’re committed to representing Pakistan at the top level, but we cannot proceed without immediate government support,” said Mujahid. He pointed out the disparity in regional funding, noting India’s hockey budget is in the billions, while Pakistan’s remains inadequate.

Mujahid also warned that failure to participate after commitment could result in sanctions from the International Hockey Federation (FIH). The PHF has already sought an extension from FIH President Tayyab Ikram to resolve the financial impasse.

On the technical side, head coach Tahir Zaman is preparing to submit a comprehensive training and competition plan as the federation remains hopeful for a breakthrough.

Meanwhile, DG PSB Yasir Pirzada confirmed the financial burden, saying:

“We’ve asked PHF to submit a formal proposal. The funding required is substantial—this isn’t cricket where funds are readily available. We’ll take the case to the federal government.”

Pirzada also addressed the increased usage charges at the Naseer Bunda Hockey Stadium, stating they were necessary to cover maintenance costs but assured a review of club-level fees. “Hockey is our national sport and must be prioritized,” he asserted.

During a briefing to a Rawalpindi-Islamabad Sports Journalists Association (RISJA) delegation, Pirzada detailed ongoing renovations at the Pakistan Sports Complex, which aims to meet international hosting standards. He underscored government resolve under the leadership of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, IPC Minister Rana Sanaullah, and Secretary Mohyuddin Wani to revive Pakistan’s sporting image.

The development strategy includes:

  • Advanced training camps with coaching, nutrition, and psychological support
  • Talent identification at schools and colleges
  • Public-private partnerships to strengthen infrastructure
  • Regular national competitions to build a stronger athletic base

The session concluded with active journalist engagement, reflecting PSB’s intent to build a collaborative environment with the media for long-term sports development.
