Singer Asim Azhar and actor Merub Ali have officially called off their engagement, the couple announced in a joint statement shared on Instagram on Thursday.
In a heartfelt message posted to his Instagram Stories, the Radd singer wrote, “We hope this message finds you well. We wanted to take a moment to share something personal, as we believe we owe it to those who have supported us — our fans, friends, and well-wishers.”
He continued, “After much thought and reflection, Merub and I have decided to part ways peacefully and mutually. Though we shared meaningful moments and genuinely envisioned a future together, sometimes life leads us in different directions.”
Asim, who got engaged to Sinf-e-Aahan star Merub in 2021, emphasized that the separation was on good terms. “We hold the utmost respect for one another and for our families — and always will,” he wrote, adding a request for privacy during this time.
The message concluded with a note of gratitude: “Thank you for your continued support.”
Throughout their relationship, Asim and Merub had largely kept their personal lives out of the public eye, occasionally offering brief glimpses on social media. Even prior to their official engagement in 2021, speculation about their relationship had been rife.
Shortly before confirming their engagement, Asim addressed a viral, doctored screenshot falsely claiming he had referred to Merub as his “sister.” Taking to X (formerly Twitter), he clarified, “To everyone reposting a screenshot from a ‘news channel’ claiming I called Merub my sister — based on a fake chat made by a fan — I had already addressed this a year ago.”
He continued in another post, “Clarification was necessary because the narrative was disgusting. Anyway, mithai will reach everyone soon. I love you all. Thank you for the love and duas.”
Merub also addressed the situation via her Instagram story, urging people to avoid spreading misinformation or dragging others into the narrative. “Please refrain from sharing false information, fake dates, and especially from putting others down to celebrate us,” she wrote — seemingly referencing backlash aimed at actor Hania Aamir, Asim’s ex-girlfriend.
Despite the end of their engagement, both Asim and Merub have chosen to part ways with mutual respect and a desire for privacy, reminding fans that real-life decisions deserve compassion and understanding.
