CERT Issues Alert Following Massive Data BreachUrges Pakistani Users to Activate Two-Factor Authentication

ISLAMABAD: Passwords and sensitive data belonging to over 180 million users worldwide have been compromised in a large-scale data breach affecting major platforms such as Google, Facebook, Apple, Instagram, Snapchat, and even some government portals.

Pakistan’s National Cyber Emergency Response Team (CERT) has issued an advisory warning that this breach poses serious risks including identity theft, account hacking, and cyberattacks.

The advisory specifically cautions that government institutions and financial accounts may also be vulnerable, potentially putting sensitive government systems and agencies at risk.

CERT strongly recommends that users immediately change their passwords and enable two-factor authentication on all accounts to enhance security. Stolen information has been stored in databases, increasing the threat of automated cyberattacks.

Additionally, users are encouraged to use password managers, avoid storing passwords in emails or unsecured files, and keep antivirus and security software up to date.

The advisory also urges vigilance for unusual login activities and calls on institutions to promptly notify affected users. Failure to respond quickly could compromise the integrity of the national digital infrastructure.
