Digital Birth and Death Registration System Rolled Out in Hospitals

NADRA launches initiative to modernize civil recordkeeping nationwide

The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has introduced a new digital system to register births and deaths at hospitals and healthcare facilities across Pakistan.

A NADRA spokesperson confirmed that formal agreements have been signed with provincial governments to overhaul and digitize the civil registration process. A signing ceremony took place in Karachi, attended by Sindh’s Secretary of Health, Secretary of Local Government, and NADRA Sindh Director General Ehtesham Shahid. Sindh’s Minister for Local Government, Saeed Ghani, was also present.

The spokesperson highlighted that the goal is to modernize how vital life events are documented. With the new digital system in place, hospitals and clinics can now directly report birth and death data, ensuring timely, precise, and complete updates to the national citizen database.

This development is part of the broader “Udan Pakistan” initiative, which seeks to boost economic progress through digital innovation. Accurate civil data will help drive projects such as digital identity services and foster growth in the digital economy.

NADRA is also collaborating with the World Bank on the “Digital Economy Enhancement Project,” engaging with multiple national institutions to support this digital transformation.

A similar partnership was recently formalized in Quetta between NADRA and the Balochistan government, with top officials from the provincial health and local government departments, along with NADRA’s Balochistan Director General, in attendance.
