SWAT — At least 12 people have lost their lives and 10 remain missing after powerful flash floods swept through Swat on Friday, triggered by relentless rainfall that caused the Swat River to overflow.
The flooding, particularly severe near the GE Qurban Hotel on Swat Bypass, unleashed destruction across the region. Rescue operations were immediately launched by the provincial government, deploying 120 personnel across eight critical points. So far, 61 individuals have been rescued, while the search for the missing continues amid challenging conditions.
Rescue officials confirmed that six bodies were recovered from near the GE Qurban Hotel, three from Angro Dheri, and three more from the Swat Bypass near Relax Hotel. Among those rescued, 58 were saved from areas along the Swat River Bypass Road, and three near GE Qurban Hotel. Additional operations in Bara Bama Khail (Mita) led to the rescue of 20–30 people, while 22 others were saved from Imam Dheri.
Efforts remain underway to locate the 10 still missing — including seven from Ghali Gay, one from Panjigram, and two from other locations — with particular focus on the Malakand district.
To ensure public safety, the provincial administration has imposed Section 144, prohibiting recreational activity along riverbanks. All riverside hotels, restaurants, and businesses have been ordered to shut down temporarily.
Images from the site show residents gathering in shock after tourists enjoying a riverside picnic were swept away. Authorities have urged citizens to avoid riverbeds and strictly adhere to safety protocols.
In response to the tragedy, the chief minister has announced compensation for the families of those who lost their lives and has formed a committee to investigate the incident. The provincial government continues to monitor the situation closely as rescue and relief operations press on.
