General Asim Munir Promoted to Field Marshal in Recognition of Leadership During Recent Military Standoff

In a historic move, the federal cabinet on Tuesday approved the promotion of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir to the prestigious rank of field marshal. This elevation recognizes his exceptional leadership during Operation Bunyanum Marsoos and the recent military conflict with India, known as Marka-i-Haq.

The decision comes against the backdrop of escalating tensions between Pakistan and India following the deadly attack in Pahalgam last month. On the night of May 6-7, India launched multiple air strikes targeting Punjab and Azad Kashmir, resulting in civilian casualties. Pakistan retaliated by downing five Indian jets, leading to a period of intense military exchanges, including drone interceptions and strikes on airbases. It was only through U.S. intervention on May 10 that both nations agreed to a ceasefire, bringing a fragile calm to the region. Officials from Pakistan and India have since confirmed that the ceasefire has no expiration date, dispelling rumors of a potential lapse over the weekend.

The rank of field marshal is the highest possible rank in the Pakistan Army, modeled after the British Army’s tradition. Historically, only General Mohammad Ayub Khan has held this distinguished title in Pakistan.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, chairing the federal cabinet meeting, announced the promotion, praising General Munir for his “high strategy and courageous leadership” during the operations that ensured Pakistan’s security and territorial integrity. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) statement highlighted how COAS Munir “led the army with exemplary courage and determination,” orchestrating a comprehensive war strategy that culminated in a historic victory in Marka-i-Haq.

The government also unanimously decided to extend the tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zahar Ahmed Babar Sidhu, recognizing his contributions to the Pakistan Air Force.

In addition, the cabinet announced plans to award officers, soldiers, war veterans, martyrs, and citizens from various sectors for their invaluable services during the military operations.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif personally briefed President Asif Ali Zardari on the promotion. In response, President Zardari praised General Munir’s effective defense against Indian aggression, lauding his strategic military acumen. He also congratulated Air Chief Marshal Sidhu on the extension of his service.

General Asim Munir expressed deep gratitude for the honor, dedicating it to the entire nation, the armed forces, and especially the martyrs and veterans. “This is not an individual honor but an honor for the armed forces of Pakistan and the entire nation,” he stated in a message released by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also extended his congratulations, commending General Munir’s dedication, talent, and professional excellence via an official social media post.

This promotion marks a significant moment in Pakistan’s military history, reinforcing the government’s commitment to recognizing and honoring leadership that safeguards national sovereignty amidst ongoing regional challenges.
