Aim to reduce traffic violations and enhance public safety
LAHORE:
The Punjab government is preparing a comprehensive plan to significantly raise traffic fines across the province, with some penalties potentially increasing up to ten times.
This initiative, launched under the guidance of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, seeks to tackle the surge in road violations and boost overall public safety.
According to SSP Traffic Ghazanfar Ali Shah, common offenses like riding without a helmet, driving against traffic, and driving without a valid license will carry proposed fines of Rs2,000.
“The current fine structure, which has been in place since 2006, is outdated and ineffective for today’s traffic conditions. Updating these penalties is essential to enforce better road discipline,” he explained, adding that the new fines will take effect immediately upon approval.
In response to escalating traffic violations, Punjab traffic authorities have stepped up enforcement against unlicensed drivers.
Over 178,000 challans for driving without a license were issued this month alone, with Lahore accounting for more than 70,000 of these cases.
Additional Inspector General (AIG) Traffic Mirza Farhan Baig has directed all regional traffic units to adopt a strict zero-tolerance policy toward unlicensed motorists.
“No leniency will be granted. Citizens must obtain valid licenses to ensure their safety and avoid penalties,” he emphasized.
In a related move, district police have been authorized to assist in recovering unpaid e-challans.
With outstanding fines exceeding Rs6 billion, defaulters now face home raids and may encounter restrictions on vehicle transfers, registrations, and other official procedures.
