HBO Reveals Cast for New ‘Harry Potter’ Series

HBO has announced the cast for its highly anticipated original series based on the beloved Harry Potter franchise.

John Lithgow—an acclaimed actor, poet, writer, and musician—will take on the role of Albus Dumbledore. Janet McTeer, a celebrated English actress, has been cast as Professor Minerva McGonagall, while British actor Paapa Essiedu will portray Severus Snape. Nick Frost, known for his work as an actor, comedian, and writer, will bring Rubeus Hagrid to life.

In addition to the main cast, Luke Thallon is set to appear as Professor Quirinus Quirrell, and five-time BAFTA winner Paul Whitehouse will play the role of Argus Filch.

Staying faithful to J.K. Rowling’s original books, the series aims to recreate the iconic characters and magical adventures that have enchanted readers and audiences for over two decades.

The show will premiere exclusively on the streaming platform Max, with an international rollout planned in countries such as the United Kingdom, Türkiye, Germany, and Italy.

Francesca Gardiner serves as both writer and executive producer for the series. Direction and executive production for several episodes will be handled by Mark Mylod, in collaboration with Bronte Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television.

Production is being led by J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Bronte Film and TV, alongside David Heyman from Heyday Films.
