The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a nationwide warning, forecasting heavy to very heavy monsoon rains that could trigger flash floods, landslides, and urban flooding in multiple areas over the coming days.
High-Risk Areas Identified
The PMD warned of possible flash flooding in local streams and nullahs across Murree, Galliyat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Buner, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Nowshera, Swabi, Mardan, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan, along with northeastern Punjab, Kashmir, and a wide swathe of Balochistan, including Barkhan, Kohlu, Musa Khel, Dera Bugti, Loralai, Bolan, Zhob, Ziarat, Kalat, Khuzdar, Awaran, and Lasbela.
Landslides and mudslides are likely in vulnerable hilly regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Galliyat, and Kashmir, potentially causing road blockages and infrastructure damage.
Urban Flooding Risk in Major Cities
Urban centres including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Nowshera, and Peshawar are at risk of urban flooding due to the accumulation of rainwater in low-lying areas.
The current weather pattern is being driven by strong monsoon currents and an accompanying westerly wave affecting large parts of central and southern Pakistan.
Rainfall Forecast & Temperature Outlook
Widespread rain with wind and thunderstorms is expected in Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, Punjab, northeastern and southern Balochistan, and upper Sindh through Monday and Tuesday. Isolated heavy rainfall is also forecast in Kashmir, upper Punjab, the Potohar region, K-P, and northern Balochistan.
Over the last 24 hours, notable rainfall was recorded in several locations:
- Karor – 37mm
- Kot Addu – 31mm
- DG Khan – 22mm
- Muzaffarabad – 21mm
- Lasbela – 15mm
Meanwhile, Gilgit-Baltistan remained extremely hot, with Nokkundi hitting the highest temperature at 47°C.
Conditions in Sindh and Karachi
In southern Sindh, weak monsoon currents continue to influence the weather. The PMD has forecast partly cloudy and humid conditions for Karachi, with light rain or drizzle expected in the morning and night hours through Tuesday and Wednesday. The city’s maximum temperature is projected to remain between 33°C and 35°C.
Light showers are also expected in Tharparkar, Badin, Thatta, Sujawal, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Jamshoro, Hyderabad, and Tando Muhammad Khan, including parts of Karachi Division. On Tuesday, Qambar Shahdadkot, Larkana, and Dadu may also receive scattered rainfall.
For the rest of Sindh, the weather will likely remain partly cloudy, hot, and humid.
The PMD continues to monitor the evolving weather system and advises local authorities to remain vigilant in flood-prone and vulnerable areas.
