In the wake of heightened military confrontations between India and Pakistan, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has stated that India will release official information regarding the downing of Indian Air Force (IAF) jets “when it is the right time.” This remark comes amidst conflicting claims from both nations about aerial losses during recent hostilities.
During a press briefing, Misri responded to inquiries about the downed jets by saying, “When it is the right time, we will officially inform you about this.” His comments follow Pakistan’s assertion that it shot down five Indian aircraft in retaliation for India’s “Operation Sindoor,” a series of missile strikes targeting alleged militant infrastructure within Pakistan. India has not confirmed any aircraft losses, while independent analysts have identified debris from at least one Indian jet in Indian-administered Kashmir.
The current escalation stems from the April 23 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 27 individuals, including 25 Hindu tourists. India attributes the attack to Pakistan-based militant groups, prompting its military response. Pakistan denies involvement and has condemned India’s strikes as acts of war, reporting civilian casualties and vowing retaliation.
The situation has led to significant diplomatic fallout, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, visa services, and trade agreements between the two countries. Both nations have expelled diplomats and closed border crossings, further straining relations. International leaders have expressed concern over the potential for further escalation between the nuclear-armed neighbors.
