AHMEDABAD: Indian border troops fatally shot a Pakistani man who crossed the international border and failed to stop when ordered, according to a statement released on Saturday.
The incident occurred two weeks after India and Pakistan, long-time adversaries, agreed to a ceasefire following four days of hostilities that killed over 70 people through missile, drone, and artillery exchanges.
India’s Border Security Force (BSF) said the shooting happened on Friday evening. Troops spotted “a suspicious person advancing towards the border fence,” located beyond the international border in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district.
“The intruder was challenged but continued to move forward, prompting the troops to open fire,” the BSF said in a statement. “He was neutralized on the spot.”
A photograph released by the BSF showed a deceased man with greying hair.
The recent hostilities between the nuclear-armed nations were sparked by an April 22 attack on tourists in Pahalgam, the deadliest assault on civilians in the disputed Muslim-majority region in decades.
