Investigating Officer Testifies in GHQ Protest Case

RAWALPINDI: The investigating officer in the case of the violent protests outside the General Headquarters (GHQ) on May 9, 2023, provided testimony before an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Rawalpindi on Friday.

Former prime minister Imran Khan is among the accused. The protests erupted after Khan’s arrest in a corruption case at the Islamabad High Court and quickly escalated, with demonstrators setting fire to and damaging government buildings and military facilities.

In the aftermath, the government initiated a crackdown on PTI leaders and supporters, resulting in multiple arrests.

Imran Khan was formally charged in the case on December 5, 2024. The PTI founder, held in Adiala Jail since August 2023, was arrested by Rawalpindi police in connection with the protests in January 2024.

Khan later filed a petition for acquittal, which the ATC dismissed earlier this year.

During the proceedings, Special Prosecutor Raja Ikram Ameen Minhas presented the investigating officer to the court. The officer detailed the events, police response, arrests, and items recovered from PTI supporters.

So far, only 26 of the 102 prosecution witnesses have testified in the ATC. Most of the witnesses so far have been police personnel and individuals who witnessed the acts of vandalism.

The next hearing is scheduled for June 29.
