Israel-Iran Conflict Escalates: Airstrikes Kill Dozens, Target Nuclear Sites, Trigger Global Alarm

PakCorrespondent.com – June 13, 2025

In a dramatic and deadly escalation, Israel launched a wide-ranging military assault on Iran early Friday, targeting critical nuclear facilities, missile factories, and high-ranking military officials. The surprise strikes, dubbed “Operation Rising Lion” by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have resulted in at least 78 deaths and over 300 injuries, including top Iranian military commanders and six nuclear scientists.

The assault, described by Tehran as an unprovoked act of war, has prompted an international crisis, disrupted global air traffic, and drawn urgent calls for restraint from world leaders.

Key Sites Targeted

Among the major sites struck:

  • Natanz: Iran’s primary uranium enrichment facility suffered confirmed damage. Home to over 13,000 operating centrifuges, it has long been central to Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
  • Khondab (Arak): Known for its plutonium potential, the heavy-water reactor was hit in the opening salvo.
  • Tehran: Several strikes in the capital killed dozens, including civilians. The headquarters of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was among the targets.
  • Tabriz & Shiraz: Additional strikes were reported in these cities, including attacks on an airport in Tabriz and a missile production facility in Shiraz.

Despite the extensive campaign, some sites—including Bushehr, Fordow, and Isfahan—were confirmed unharmed, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

High-Profile Casualties

Iranian state media confirmed the assassinations of several senior officials and scientists, including:

  • Major-General Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of Staff of Iran’s armed forces.
  • General Hossein Salami, IRGC Commander-in-Chief.
  • General Gholamali Rashid, Deputy Commander-in-Chief.
  • Six prominent nuclear scientists, among them Fereydoun Abbasi, former head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization.

The attack also claimed dozens of civilian lives, including children, particularly in residential areas of Tehran and Tabriz.

Iran’s Response and Global Condemnation

In a letter to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Iran condemned the assault as a “declaration of war” and demanded international accountability. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed “severe punishment,” declaring that Israel had “unleashed its wicked and bloody hand” and would suffer a “bitter fate.”

UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged “maximum restraint,” warning against a descent into broader conflict. China, France, and Russia expressed deep concern, while the United States denied involvement.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump stated, “Iran cannot have a nuclear bomb,” but insisted the U.S. had no role in the Israeli operation, cautioning Tehran against retaliating against American personnel.

Air Travel Chaos

The conflict has severely disrupted regional and international air traffic:

  • Iran, Iraq, Jordan, and Israel closed their airspace.
  • Major carriers including Emirates, Lufthansa, Air India, Qatar Airways, and El Al suspended or diverted flights.
  • Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport was shut down.
  • Dubai and Abu Dhabi airports issued advisories amid widespread delays and cancellations.
  • Budget airlines like flydubai, AJet, and Wizz Air Abu Dhabi suspended flights to affected countries.

Flight tracking data showed re-routed air traffic over Central Asia and Saudi Arabia, with industry groups urging extreme caution.

Economic Fallout

Financial markets responded sharply:

  • Oil prices surged amid fears of further disruption in the Middle East.
  • Stock markets dipped across Asia.
  • Investors flocked to safe-haven assets like gold and the Swiss franc.

Outlook and Diplomatic Stalemate

Israel insists the operation will continue “for as many days as it takes,” claiming Iran possesses sufficient enriched uranium for up to 15 nuclear bombs.

Meanwhile, US-Iran nuclear negotiations scheduled in Oman are reportedly stalled. Intelligence assessments maintain that Iran has not resumed a formal nuclear weapons program, yet the military escalation now threatens to derail all diplomatic efforts.

With Israel on high alert for counterstrikes and Iran pledging vengeance, the Middle East stands on the brink of a wider and potentially uncontrollable conflict.
