London Aims to Host 2029 World Athletics Championships

London has officially expressed its ambition to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, Mayor Sadiq Khan and Athletic Ventures announced on Sunday, just ahead of the 45th London Marathon.

A formal bid will be submitted to World Athletics in September, contingent on securing £45 million ($59.91 million) in government funding.

According to a feasibility study, hosting the event could generate an unprecedented economic and social impact exceeding £400 million. The proposal is being spearheaded by Athletic Ventures—a collaboration between UK Athletics (UKA), the Great Run Company, and London Marathon Events.

The capital previously showcased its capabilities by successfully hosting the 2017 World Championships, following the 2012 Olympic Games. That edition drew sell-out crowds for all evening sessions at the Olympic Stadium, earning global praise.

“London 2017 proved what this city and nation are capable of,” said UKA President Denise Lewis, who was part of the successful 2017 bid team. “It was an unforgettable moment—full stadiums, international excitement, and a meaningful legacy. I’m confident we can achieve that again in 2029.”

The announcement was made on the same day as the London Marathon, which was expected to see 56,000 participants, serving as the perfect backdrop to unveil the city’s latest sporting ambition.

Lewis, who won Olympic gold in the heptathlon at the Sydney 2000 Games, noted that the bid is part of a broader strategy to transform how the UK hosts major international sporting events.

Meanwhile, Birmingham has already been chosen to host the 2026 European Athletics Championships, reinforcing the UK’s continued role in staging top-tier global athletics competitions.
