Manchester City Stunned by Al-Hilal in Club World Cup Exit

Manchester City’s FIFA Club World Cup campaign came to a dramatic end after a thrilling 4–3 extra-time defeat to Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Hilal. The upset sees Al-Hilal advance to the quarter-finals, where they’ll face Brazil’s Fluminense on July 4.

City started strong and looked in control early on, with Bernardo Silva opening the scoring in the 9th minute after capitalising on a defensive error — though replays hinted at a potential handball by Rayan Aït-Nouri in the build-up, drawing protests from Al-Hilal players.

Despite dominating possession and creating a flurry of chances in the first half, City were repeatedly denied by goalkeeper Yassine Bono, who produced key saves to keep out efforts from Savinho, Ilkay Gündogan, and Josko Gvardiol.

But City’s missed opportunities came back to haunt them. Just 44 seconds into the second half, Marcos Leonardo headed in the equaliser. Minutes later, Malcom stunned the English champions with a composed finish to give Al-Hilal a 2–1 lead in the 52nd minute.

City hit back almost immediately, with Erling Haaland nodding home from a corner to level the score. Manuel Akanji then struck the post, and Haaland’s rebound was dramatically cleared off the line by Ali Lajami as City pushed for a winner.

Kalidou Koulibaly looked to have secured victory for Al-Hilal with a towering header in the 94th minute, only for Phil Foden to respond moments later with a sharp volley to force extra time.

However, in the 112th minute, Marcos Leonardo sealed his brace and Al-Hilal’s place in the next round with a composed finish at the back post, handing City a rare and painful defeat.

Bono, Morocco’s World Cup 2022 hero, was outstanding between the posts, making 10 saves and keeping Al-Hilal afloat amid relentless City pressure. Meanwhile, Leonardo, just 22 years old, delivered a breakout performance, scoring twice and tormenting City’s backline. Former City full-back João Cancelo also made his presence felt in a dynamic display.

The loss sends Pep Guardiola’s side home early from a tournament they entered as strong favourites. Al-Hilal, buoyed by their sensational victory, now remain in Orlando to prepare for their quarter-final showdown with Fluminense. The winner will go on to face either Chelsea or Palmeiras in the semi-finals, scheduled to take place in New York or New Jersey.
