Mike Hesson Appointed as Pakistan’s New White-Ball Head Coach; Aqib Javed Named Director of High Performance

In a significant reshuffle aimed at boosting the national team’s limited-overs performance, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed Mike Hesson as the new head coach for ODIs and T20Is, effective May 26, 2025.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, with PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirming the development via a post on X (formerly Twitter). Hesson, who is currently head coach of Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), is expected to join the national setup after the tournament resumes on May 17.

“After evaluating several applications, I’m pleased to announce that former New Zealand cricketer and renowned coach Mike Hesson will join us as the new white-ball head coach for the Pakistan national team,” Naqvi posted.

Hesson is widely respected for his analytical coaching style and calm leadership, having previously guided New Zealand to the 2015 ICC World Cup final alongside captain Brendon McCullum. He has also coached Kenya at the international level.

The coaching position became vacant following Pakistan’s tour of New Zealand in April 2025, prompting a global search that ultimately led to Hesson’s selection.

In a corresponding move to strengthen the country’s cricket infrastructure, the PCB has appointed former fast bowler Aqib Javed as the new Director of High Performance. Aqib, who represented Pakistan in 22 Tests and 163 ODIs, brings with him considerable coaching experience, including a past stint as the national team’s interim head coach.

Chairman Naqvi commented on the dual appointments:

“To strengthen our cricket infrastructure, Aqib Javed joins us as Director of High Performance, complementing Mike Hesson’s appointment. Together, they will play a pivotal role in the evolution and success of Pakistan cricket.”

The changes come ahead of a busy white-ball season for Pakistan, including the ICC Champions Trophy and a home ODI series. The PCB is optimistic that Hesson’s tactical expertise, coupled with Aqib’s developmental insight, will mark the beginning of a transformative phase for the national team.
