Nicholas Pooran, former captain of the West Indies limited-overs side, has announced his retirement from international cricket.
The 29-year-old Trinidadian, widely regarded as one of the most dynamic batters in the game, played 106 T20 Internationals, scoring 2,275 runs and recording 13 half-centuries. His 149 sixes in T20Is place him fifth on the all-time list — a testament to his explosive style at the crease.
Pooran had also taken on the leadership role for West Indies in white-ball formats, but stepped down after the team’s disappointing early exit from the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Reflecting on his journey, Pooran shared an emotional message on social media:
“This game we love has given and will continue to give so much — joy, purpose, unforgettable memories, and a chance to represent the people of the West Indies. Wearing that maroon, standing for the anthem, and giving everything I had each time I stepped on the field… it’s hard to put into words what that truly means to me. To have led the team as captain is a privilege I will always hold close to my heart.”
Pooran’s final appearance for the West Indies came in December 2023 during a T20 series against Bangladesh. His last ODI outing was against Sri Lanka in July the same year.
Confirming the news, Cricket West Indies said in a statement:
“Nicholas officially informed the leadership of his decision to retire from international cricket, bringing to a close a significant chapter in his career. His performances on the field and influence within the team have made a lasting impact on West Indies cricket.”
Though stepping away from the international stage, Pooran is expected to remain a prominent figure in global franchise cricket. He recently played for the Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League and opted out of West Indies’ ongoing T20 series against England to rest.
As one chapter closes, Pooran’s journey in the world of T20 leagues appears set to continue, bringing his flair and firepower to fans around the world.
