Pakistan Evacuates Over 700 Nationals from Conflict Zones in Iran and Iraq Amid Escalating Iran-Israel Tensions

As tensions between Iran and Israel escalate into an unprecedented direct military confrontation, Pakistan has successfully evacuated over 700 of its nationals stranded in the region. The Foreign Office (FO) confirmed on Monday the safe return of 268 Pakistani pilgrims (zaireen) from Iraq, following the earlier evacuation of 450 pilgrims from Iran.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the returnees from Iraq were repatriated via two special Iraqi Airways flights from Basra, which landed safely in Karachi and Islamabad. The government remains actively engaged with Iraqi authorities and the airline to facilitate the timely and safe return of remaining Pakistani nationals still in Iraq.

“All Pakistani zaireen in Iraq are urged to stay in touch with the Pakistan Embassy in Baghdad, their designated mandoobs, and relevant airlines for updates on travel arrangements,” the FO advised. It further noted that Iraqi Airways continues to operate daily flights from Basra to Dubai, which may serve as an alternative route for returnees.

The FO also reiterated its commitment to ensuring the welfare of its citizens, advising those stranded to remain prepared for travel at short notice. A 24-hour Crisis Management Unit (CMU) is active at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide assistance, and can be reached at +92 51-9207887 or via email at [email protected].

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar earlier confirmed the successful evacuation of 450 Pakistani pilgrims from Iran, stating that the operation concluded on Saturday. Additionally, arrangements are underway for the safe return of 154 Pakistani students stranded in Iran. He emphasized that embassies in both countries are coordinating closely to ensure the safety and accommodation of all Pakistanis during the ongoing crisis.

Regional Conflict: Iran-Israel Escalation

The evacuations come against the backdrop of the most intense military conflict to date between Iran and Israel. On June 13, Israel launched “Operation Rising Lion,” a surprise aerial campaign targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities, ballistic missile sites, and top military leadership. The strikes reportedly killed 78 people, including senior generals of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and at least eight nuclear scientists.

In retaliation, Iran launched a wave of ballistic missile and drone attacks on Israeli military installations and civilian areas. At least 14 people were killed and dozens injured across Israel, including 76 in a single missile barrage. In central Israel, nine buildings were reduced to rubble in Ramat Gan, displacing hundreds.

Iranian officials claim the Israeli strikes have killed over 224 civilians, including 70 women and children, as reported by Al Jazeera. The bombings hit key districts in northern Tehran such as Niavaran, Saadat Abad, Valiasr, and Hafte Tir.

Ongoing Risk and Preparedness

As the regional situation remains volatile, Pakistan’s diplomatic missions are on high alert. Foreign Minister Dar assured that “all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety of Pakistani nationals.” The government continues to monitor developments closely and plans to expand evacuation operations as needed.

With the conflict showing no signs of abating, Pakistani citizens currently in affected areas are advised to exercise caution and maintain close contact with their respective embassies.
