Pakistan Retains Right to Self-Defence, PM Shehbaz Tells US Secretary of State

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif spoke by phone with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday, according to a press release from the Prime Minister’s Office.

During the call, PM Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity, underscoring that the country reserves the right to exercise self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter. He also expressed appreciation for President Trump’s concern regarding the current security situation in South Asia.

The statement highlighted that the prime minister strongly condemned India’s recent missile and drone strikes, which resulted in the deaths of 31 people, injuries to 57 others, and significant damage to civilian infrastructure.

“These attacks by India are a violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and pose a serious threat to peace and stability in the South Asian region,” PM Shehbaz stated.

According to the press release, Secretary Rubio acknowledged that the United States was closely monitoring the situation, reaffirming Washington’s commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region. He stressed the importance of both Pakistan and India working together to de-escalate tensions.
