ISLAMABAD — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed appreciation for Iran’s willingness to assist in de-escalating tensions between Pakistan and India following a deadly attack in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir. In a phone conversation on Saturday evening, Sharif welcomed Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s offer to mediate and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace.
The April 22 assault in Pahalgam resulted in 26 fatalities, predominantly among tourists, and was claimed by the previously unknown group, The Resistance Front (TRF). In response, India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, while Pakistan threatened to suspend the Simla Agreement and closed its airspace to Indian flights. India has suggested cross-border links to the attackers, a claim Pakistan has firmly denied.
During the call, Prime Minister Sharif emphasized that Pakistan condemns all forms of terrorism and has no involvement in the Pahalgam attack. He reiterated Pakistan’s readiness to participate in a transparent and impartial investigation. Sharif also condemned India’s unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, describing the weaponization of water resources as “unacceptable” and vowed that Pakistan would defend its interests at any cost.
In solidarity with Iran, which recently experienced a devastating explosion at Shahid Rajaee Port, Sharif expressed condolences and offered assistance. President Pezeshkian thanked Sharif for his support and extended an invitation for the Pakistani Prime Minister to visit Tehran. Sharif reciprocated the invitation, underscoring the importance of strengthening bilateral ties.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar engaged in discussions with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to its “iron-clad friendship” with China. Dar categorically rejected India’s actions and propaganda against Pakistan, emphasizing the need for regional peace and stability. Both nations agreed to enhance cooperation and oppose unilateralism and hegemonic policies.
In a show of national unity, Pakistan Kissan Ittehad President Khalid Mahmood Khokhar declared that farmers across the country are prepared to support the armed forces in defending the nation. He emphasized that farmers are ready to stand at the border and, if necessary, take action to protect Pakistan’s water resources.
The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, with diplomatic efforts underway to prevent further escalation and promote dialogue between Pakistan and India.
