PM Shehbaz Launches FBR’s First AI-Powered Customs System

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday unveiled Pakistan’s first AI-driven Customs Clearance and Risk Management System (RMS), developed by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) as part of ongoing tax system reforms.

The advanced system employs artificial intelligence and bots to evaluate the nature and value of imported and exported goods. By using machine learning, the technology is designed to continuously improve customs processing, minimize human involvement, and significantly reduce delays.

According to initial data from test runs, the system has already shown promising results, with a 92% boost in performance, an 83% rise in tax determination via Goods Declarations (GD), and more than double the number of green channel clearances.

Officials said the AI-powered platform is expected to increase transparency, streamline customs operations, and alleviate the workload on officials, while offering quicker and more accurate assessments for both traders and authorities.

Prime Minister Sharif called the initiative a “milestone in FBR reforms” and stressed the government’s commitment to building a technology-based, taxpayer-friendly system.

“By automating the tax process, we are making it more transparent, efficient, and fair,” he said, adding that the system would simplify business operations and bring greater convenience to taxpayers.

The meeting also reviewed AI-powered video analytics tools aimed at improving tax compliance in the manufacturing sector. These tools, tested during pilot phases, delivered 98% efficiency without requiring direct human involvement, the FBR reported.

The session was attended by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, FBR Chairman, and other senior officials.
