PM Shehbaz shares message on International Day of UN Peacekeepers
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering dedication to United Nations peacekeeping efforts, emphasizing the need for the international community to modernize UN operations to address emerging global challenges.
In his message on the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, the prime minister highlighted that over the past seven decades, more than 235,000 Pakistani troops have participated in 48 UN missions. Tragically, 181 Pakistani peacekeepers have sacrificed their lives while serving.
“This day offers a crucial moment to evaluate the challenges confronting UN peacekeepers, including rising unilateralism, financial limitations, increasing threats to peacekeeper safety and security, misinformation campaigns targeting peace operations, and the growing impact of new technologies,” he stated.
Prime Minister Shehbaz urged the global community to bolster its efforts in supporting the safety and operational effectiveness of UN peacekeeping forces.
He also called for stronger backing for the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), which plays a vital role in monitoring the ceasefire along the Line of Control in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).
Touching on regional tensions, he emphasized that recent developments in South Asia have only underscored the urgent need to resolve the Kashmir issue in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar echoed the prime minister’s sentiments, highlighting that UN peacekeeping continues to be one of the most reliable and cost-effective mechanisms for maintaining global peace.
He stressed the importance of embracing technological innovations and forging stronger regional partnerships to ensure the success of future peacekeeping operations.
