The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has taken significant action against misinformation by blocking multiple Indian websites and YouTube channels. On Wednesday, the PTA announced it had restricted access to 16 Indian YouTube news channels, 31 video links, and 32 websites for allegedly spreading false information and anti-Pakistan content.
According to the PTA, the banned content was “disseminating misleading and harmful narratives designed to manipulate public opinion and threaten national unity.”
This move comes at a time of rising regional tensions, with the PTA emphasizing its commitment to protecting Pakistan’s digital space. “This action has been taken in light of the current regional situation to safeguard national security,” the authority said in a statement.
The PTA also issued a warning, vowing to continue closely monitoring online platforms and taking swift action against any material deemed harmful to Pakistan’s national interests. “We are vigilant in combating misinformation campaigns and will enforce compliance to ensure the responsible use of digital platforms,” the statement continued.
Although the names of the blocked channels and websites were not revealed, the PTA confirmed that all were involved in promoting content against Pakistan. Pakistani citizens have been urged to report any suspicious material to aid in efforts to curb the spread of online disinformation.
