PTI Plans Loyalty Oaths for Lawmakers Amid Growing Defection Concerns

Party summons all MNAs, MPAs to Islamabad as Supreme Court verdict shakes internal unity

Faced with rising fears of defections following a Supreme Court decision that stripped it of nearly 80 reserved seats, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has decided to administer renewed loyalty oaths to its lawmakers in a bid to reinforce party unity.

According to a report by Express News on Tuesday, PTI has called an urgent meeting of its parliamentary party in Islamabad on Wednesday, directing all Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) and Members of the Provincial Assemblies (MPAs) to attend.

Party insiders say the session will focus on rapidly shifting political dynamics in the wake of the Supreme Court’s recent ruling, which overturned a July 2024 decision that had reinstated PTI’s status as a parliamentary party and entitled it to reserved seats in both national and provincial legislatures.

Key discussions are expected to revolve around the evolving political landscape in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), where shifting alliances may prove decisive in shaping the future power structure.

Particular attention is being paid to K-P, where PTI-backed independents form the core of the provincial power base. The party leadership is reportedly concerned about overtures from rival parties aiming to peel away support. Thirty-five of these independents, who previously pledged loyalty to PTI, are expected to renew their allegiance during the meeting.

Sources confirm that a similar oath-taking ceremony was held after the general elections, but fresh anxieties over internal rifts and external pressure have prompted another round of pledges.

The Supreme Court’s short order last week has dramatically shifted the balance of power in the National Assembly, placing the ruling coalition on the brink of a two-thirds majority—an outcome that could have profound consequences for constitutional amendments and national governance.
