LAHORE – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi was transferred from Kot Lakhpat Jail to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) on Saturday following complaints of chest pain, his lawyer confirmed.
According to Advocate Rana Mudassar, Qureshi experienced heart pain early in the morning after Fajr prayers. Jail medical staff conducted an initial examination, but as his condition did not improve, he was moved to PIC via Rescue 1122 for further evaluation and treatment.
“He is currently undergoing several medical tests at the hospital,” Mudassar told Dawn.com, adding that Qureshi’s family has been informed about his health situation.
Qureshi has been in custody since August 2023, facing multiple charges connected to the May 9 riots, which erupted following the arrest of PTI Chairman Imran Khan. In July 2024, he was formally indicted by an anti-terrorism court in Lahore in a case related to the alleged attack and arson at Shadman police station.
That same month, authorities transferred him from Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi to Kot Lakhpat Jail, citing logistical challenges in repeatedly transporting him to Lahore for court proceedings.
Previously, in November 2023, Qureshi and several other senior PTI leaders were indicted in multiple cases tied to the May 9 unrest. The former minister has pleaded not guilty to all allegations.
