Punjab Declares State of Emergency, Closes Schools After Indian Airstrikes

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz declared a province-wide state of emergency on Wednesday, ordering the immediate closure of all educational institutions in response to Indian missile strikes that targeted civilian areas across Pakistan.

Addressing an emergency press briefing, Maryam Nawaz condemned the Indian aggression and stated, “India may have started this, but we will finish it.” She affirmed the provincial government’s full support for the armed forces and called on citizens to stand united.

In light of the crisis, all leaves for medical staff were canceled, and civil defence personnel were recalled to active duty. Hospitals, rescue services, and emergency responders were directed to operate at full capacity and remain on high alert.

The announcement followed confirmation from Pakistan’s military that Indian forces had carried out airstrikes on five locations—Bahawalpur, Kotli, Muzaffarabad, Bagh, and Muridke—specifically targeting civilian zones while avoiding military installations.

In a swift counterattack, Pakistani forces launched retaliatory missile strikes, reportedly destroying an Indian brigade headquarters and a military post in the Dudhnial sector near the Line of Control (LoC). According to security officials, the Pakistan Air Force also shot down three Indian aircraft.

Reiterating Pakistan’s commitment to peace, CM Maryam warned that the nation would never compromise its sovereignty. “We desire peace, but one rooted in dignity. If war is forced upon us, the entire nation will rise as one,” she said.

As a precaution, residents were urged to stay indoors and limit movement. Maryam advised the public to rely on official channels for updates and to report any emergencies to local hospitals or rescue services.

Emergency protocols have been activated across Punjab, with Rescue 1122, district administrations, and civil defence units all placed on high alert as the situation continues to unfold.
