Putin and Xi Challenge the West as Ukraine Reports Hundreds of Russian Attacks

MOSCOW — Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping projected a united front against the West on Thursday in Moscow, just ahead of Russia’s Victory Day celebrations. Meanwhile, Ukraine accused Russia of launching hundreds of attacks on the front lines, despite a supposed three-day ceasefire announced by Putin for the occasion.

Xi was among over 20 foreign leaders in Moscow to attend Friday’s large military parade, commemorating the 80th anniversary of Nazi Germany’s defeat in World War II — an event unfolding as Russia’s war in Ukraine enters its third year.

Following a more than three-hour meeting, Putin described his discussions with Xi as “traditionally warm and friendly,” referring to the Chinese leader as his “dear friend.” Xi emphasized that the relationship between Beijing and Moscow brings “positive energy” to a world in turmoil, taking a jab at the United States by condemning “hegemonic bullying.”

In a joint statement released afterward, the two leaders called the U.S. plan for a space-based missile shield — dubbed the “Iron Dome for America” — “deeply destabilizing.”

Although Beijing officially presents itself as neutral in the Ukraine conflict, the West has repeatedly accused China of providing Russia with crucial economic and diplomatic support since the invasion began in February 2022.

While Putin and Xi met, Ukrainian officials reported relentless Russian aggression on the battlefield.

Russia’s government had declared a temporary truce to coincide with the World War II commemorations, saying it was intended to test Kyiv’s “readiness” for long-term peace. However, Ukraine rejected the truce and instead called for a longer 30-day ceasefire.

“Predictably, Putin’s parade ceasefire proves to be a farce,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga said, accusing Russian forces of continuing attacks across the front.

Between midnight and midday, Russia had carried out 734 ceasefire violations and 63 assault operations, according to Ukrainian reports — AFP.
