An investigation by Israel’s public broadcaster KAN has found that the Israeli army falsely claimed to have discovered a tunnel in the Philadelphi Corridor along the Gaza-Egypt border. According to Anadolu Agency, the structure was actually a shallow canal covered with dirt.
In August, the military released images suggesting the presence of a tunnel in the demilitarized zone. However, KAN reported, “There was never a tunnel—only a dirt-covered canal.”
The investigation concluded that the fabricated claim was intended to overstate the strategic significance of the Philadelphi Corridor and delay a potential hostage agreement.
Former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant supported the findings, stating that the structure was only about a meter deep and was misrepresented to the public as a deep tunnel. “This was done to obstruct progress toward a ceasefire with Hamas,” Gallant said.
