River Water Flows Surge in Pakistan Despite Indian Efforts

ISLAMABAD: India’s reported attempts to curtail river water flows into Pakistan appear to have had little impact, as the total inflow in the country’s main rivers has surged past 236,000 cusecs, official data showed on Saturday.

According to the latest figures, the cumulative river inflow across Pakistan has reached 236,700 cusecs, indicating a healthy water situation in major rivers. The River Chenab at Head Marala alone is receiving 66,000 cusecs, while the River Jhelum at Mangla is seeing inflows of 50,000 cusecs.

The River Indus at Tarbela has registered an inflow of 83,400 cusecs, with an outflow of 55,000 cusecs. Meanwhile, the Kabul River at Nowshera recorded inflows and outflows at 36,700 cusecs.

Currently, the total usable water storage in Pakistan’s major reservoirs — Tarbela, Mangla, and Chashma — stands at 1.979 million acre-feet. Additionally, approximately 2,000 cusecs of water are flowing into the Arabian Sea.

Despite recent hostile rhetoric from India over the Indus Waters Treaty, the river flows remain strong. A spokesperson for the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) confirmed that the figures reflect favorable conditions for water availability, with 24-hour average flow data used for Tarbela, Mangla, Chashma, and Nowshera.

Detailed inflow and outflow figures are as follows:

  • Tarbela Dam: Inflow at 83,400 cusecs; outflow at 55,000 cusecs; water level at 1,435.66 feet; storage at 658,000 acre-feet.
  • Mangla Dam: Inflow at 50,100 cusecs; outflow at 32,000 cusecs; water level at 1,134.80 feet; storage at 1.164 million acre-feet.
  • Chashma Barrage: Inflow at 101,700 cusecs; outflow at 78,000 cusecs; water level at 645.50 feet; storage at 157,000 acre-feet.
  • Chenab at Head Marala: Inflow at 40,900 cusecs; outflow at 26,700 cusecs.

Meanwhile, the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) released 190,200 cusecs from various rim stations in response to the 236,700 cusecs inflow.

The current river data reflects a stable and secure water supply, undercutting concerns stirred by India’s efforts to undermine Pakistan’s water access under the longstanding Indus Waters Treaty.
