ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast scattered showers and thunderstorms across several regions of the country today (Sunday), offering a brief respite from the ongoing spell of intense spring heat.
According to the PMD, areas likely to receive rainfall and experience gusty winds include upper Sindh, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and Gilgit-Baltistan. Parts of Balochistan may also see scattered rain, with the possibility of isolated thunderstorms developing later in the day, Express News reported.
Despite the weather system moving in, large parts of the country continued to endure high temperatures over the past 24 hours. Turbat recorded the highest temperature at 45°C, closely followed by Dadu, Jacobabad, Sibi, and Mohenjo Daro at 44°C.
In other areas, Karachi, Multan, and Sahiwal recorded 37°C, while Peshawar registered 35°C. Islamabad and Quetta both reported 33°C, and temperatures in Muzaffarabad and Gilgit reached 29°C.
Punjab witnessed strong winds and heavy rainfall in some districts, effectively breaking a prolonged heatwave and bringing much-needed relief. The PMD indicated that unstable weather is expected to continue throughout the day.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has advised caution, warning that the risk of lightning remains elevated during this period.
Rain and winds were reported in key areas including Lahore and Islamabad, where the change in weather disrupted several weeks of scorching temperatures. In Lahore, the temperature dropped significantly, with a low of 22°C and a forecast high of around 32°C.
Residents welcomed the showers, describing the cool-down as both timely and refreshing amid the unusually warm spring season.
