High-Pressure System to Grip Country from June 7, Warns PMD
ISLAMABAD:
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning for an intense heatwave expected to affect most regions of the country during the Eidul Azha holidays and into the following week.
The Met Office reports that a high-pressure weather system is likely to form over Pakistan on June 7, leading to a significant rise in temperatures starting June 8.
In the northern regions — including central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan — daytime temperatures are projected to soar 5 to 7°C above normal from June 7 to 12.
Meanwhile, the southern areas, comprising upper and central Sindh, southern Punjab, and parts of Balochistan, are expected to experience temperatures 4 to 6°C higher than average during the same period.
Due to extreme surface heating, dust storms and strong gusty winds may occur across the plains.
The PMD has advised the public — especially children, elderly individuals, and women — to avoid extended exposure to the sun and to stay well-hydrated. Citizens are encouraged to take all necessary precautions to avoid heat-related health issues.
Increased temperatures in the northern regions may accelerate snowmelt, potentially impacting river flows. Authorities have called for careful water management and recommended that farmers align their agricultural activities with the weather forecast.
Relevant departments have been instructed to remain vigilant and implement measures to minimize risks during the anticipated heatwave.
