Punjab CM expected to inaugurate flyover, underpasses on June 30
The much-anticipated Nawaz Sharif Flyover on Adiala Road’s Khawaja Corporation Chowk, along with two underpasses on Mall Road and an underground pedestrian passage, is nearing completion and set for inauguration later this month.
The Punjab chief minister, Maryam Nawaz, is expected to formally open these key infrastructure projects on June 30. The Nawaz Sharif Flyover, built at a cost of Rs2.3 billion, had initially been slated for a June 3 inauguration but will now be launched at the end of the month.
On the same day, CM Maryam Nawaz is also likely to inaugurate underpasses at Flashman Hotel Chowk and Mall Plaza Chowk, along with the pedestrian walkway near AFIC. These projects, with a total cost of Rs4.388 billion, are on track for completion by June 30.
Further works are planned to ease traffic congestion at critical points. Construction of underpasses at Qasim Market, Race Course Chowk, and Charing Cross is expected to begin soon, taking advantage of the summer holidays to speed up progress. Additionally, the expansion and remodelling of Kachehri Chowk have been approved. This Rs8.5 billion project will see two flyovers and three underpasses built to streamline traffic flow.
The Rawalpindi Cantonment Board has been directed to relocate underground utility lines — including electricity, gas, water, and sewerage — at these sites to facilitate swift construction.
Upon completion of the two flyovers and three underpasses at Kachehri Chowk, along with the five planned underpasses on Mall Road and Peshawar Road, the route up to Motorway Chowk will form a true signal-free corridor. Notably, the underpass at Golra Mor is already operational.
All these initiatives are funded by the Punjab government and executed by the Communications and Works Department.
Support for public schools
In a related development, the Punjab Education Department has released Rs464.5 million to cover operational expenses of public schools across Rawalpindi Division. Province-wide, Rs4.58 billion has been disbursed for the fourth and final quarter of the fiscal year to meet the running costs and utility bills of 43,000 public primary, middle, high, and higher secondary schools.
