The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) on Saturday concluded proceedings on 19 complaints filed under Article 209 of the Constitution against judges of superior courts, while choosing to defer action on five other cases.
The meeting was held at the Supreme Court in Islamabad, chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi. It was attended by Justice Munib Akhtar of the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Aalia Neelum of the Lahore High Court, Chief Justice Muhammad Junaid Ghaffar of the Sindh High Court, and Senior Puisne Judge Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, who joined via video link.
According to sources, the council considered CJP Afridi’s suggestion to make public the names of judges whose cases had been disposed of. However, the SJC ultimately decided to maintain confidentiality, and the Supreme Court’s press release did not disclose the identities of those involved or the nature of the complaints.
The five deferred cases were also not detailed, with no indication of the judges involved or the grounds for postponement.
During the session, the council also approved the draft of the Supreme Judicial Council Secretariat Service Rules 2025. However, it held back on finalizing proposed amendments to the inquiry procedures and the judicial code of conduct, citing the need for further legal and technical review.
Article 209 of the Constitution outlines the SJC’s authority to investigate misconduct by judges of the superior judiciary and determine appropriate disciplinary actions.
