U.S. President Donald Trump escalated his public feud with Elon Musk over the weekend, warning of “serious consequences” if the billionaire tech mogul targets Republican lawmakers who support a controversial spending bill. The rift, which has rapidly intensified, now includes mutual personal attacks, political threats, and inflammatory allegations involving disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.
Feud Erupts Over GOP Bill
The fallout began after Musk slammed Trump’s signature tax and border security spending bill as an “abomination.” Some Republican lawmakers who share Musk’s opposition to the bill urged him to fund primary challenges against GOP members who vote in favor. In response, Trump told NBC News on Saturday that Musk would face “very serious consequences” if he followed through, labeling the Tesla and SpaceX CEO “disrespectful.”
The president declined to clarify what those consequences would entail but made clear there would be no reconciliation, adding, “I have no intention of speaking to him.”
This marked a sharp reversal from just a week earlier when Trump praised Musk upon his departure from the White House’s cost-cutting agency, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Their relationship quickly soured after Musk publicly denounced Trump’s policy agenda.
Epstein Allegation Adds Fuel
The feud intensified further after Musk posted — and later deleted — a claim suggesting Trump was named in unreleased government files related to Jeffrey Epstein, the financier who died in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Musk offered no evidence for the claim, which Trump dismissed as “old news.”
“There’s nothing there,” Trump told NBC. “Even Epstein’s lawyer said I had nothing to do with it.”
While Trump has acknowledged knowing Epstein socially in the early 2000s, he has denied any deeper involvement or visits to Epstein’s properties, including the now-notorious Little Saint James island. Musk’s decision to retract the explosive post did little to stem the fallout.
GOP Caught in the Crossfire
As the dispute plays out across social media and cable news, Republican leaders are urging calm, fearing the feud could overshadow critical legislative efforts. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson insisted the party would stay focused on passing the spending bill, but warned Musk not to challenge Trump’s authority.
“Do not second-guess and don’t ever challenge the president of the United States, Donald Trump,” Johnson cautioned.
Senators Ted Cruz and Mike Lee echoed calls for unity, with Lee even posting a composite image of the two men and stating, “I really like both of them.” Conservative host Sean Hannity downplayed the fight as “a major policy difference,” though he acknowledged it had “gotten personal very quick.”
Musk’s Political Future in Question
Musk, once one of the Republican Party’s largest financial backers, has reportedly considered forming a new political movement in response to his growing disenchantment with Trump-era conservatism. According to sources, Musk remains open to dialogue, but Trump has shown no willingness to engage.
Despite Trump’s dominant position within the GOP, some insiders are concerned about the potential fallout from alienating Musk, whose influence extends across technology, finance, and media — and who commands a sizable following of his own.
As the clash continues, with high stakes both politically and economically, many within the Republican Party are hoping the two power players can put aside their differences. But for now, Trump appears unwilling to extend an olive branch.
“You mean the man who has lost his mind?” Trump scoffed when asked if he’d speak to Musk, signaling that this is far from over.
