US Backs Pakistan’s Call for Neutral Probe into Pahalgam Attack

WASHINGTON: The United States has urged India and Pakistan to engage in direct dialogue to reduce tensions and expressed support for efforts — including a neutral investigation — to ensure those responsible for the Pahalgam attack are held accountable.

Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce confirmed the US was aware of Pakistan’s proposal for an independent probe into the incident.

“Pakistan is calling for an independent investigation, and we also want the perpetrators to be held accountable. We support any effort aimed at achieving that,” Bruce said.

When asked if either side had made specific commitments, Bruce noted that Secretary Rubio had emphasized two key points: the need to avoid escalation and the importance of open communication between the two neighbors.

Asked whether the US endorsed India’s claim that Pakistan supports terrorist groups, Bruce avoided confirming the accusation. She described the Pahalgam attack as “awful” but stressed that the cycle of attacks and retaliation must come to an end.

Bruce called the recent spike in tensions between India and Pakistan “unsurprising but very disappointing” and said both countries should stay engaged in dialogue. She added that the US would continue playing a role in facilitating the process.

Bruce also mentioned that Secretary Rubio had spoken with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, covering topics such as regional security, economic cooperation, and efforts to help de-escalate India-Pakistan tensions.

Acknowledging the sensitive and dangerous nature of the current situation, Bruce cautioned that details of ongoing diplomatic negotiations should remain confidential. “That’s our policy. We believe it’s important not to broadcast sensitive discussions through global media when they are happening privately between leaders,” she said.

When asked if India had provided the US with intelligence evidence to support its claims against Pakistan, Bruce declined to share details. “We will not engage in discussing the nature of our conversations or what has been communicated,” she said.

Bruce urged both India and Pakistan to “work towards a responsible solution.”
