Trent Alexander-Arnold will officially join Real Madrid on 1 June, following Liverpool’s decision to accept an $11 million transfer fee to release him early.
Real Madrid has reached an agreement to sign the England right-back, who will be eligible to play for his new team in the expanded Club World Cup, which kicks off on 14 June in the United States.
FIFA has authorized a special transfer window from 1 to 10 June to allow clubs to register new players specifically for the tournament.
Alexander-Arnold, 26, has been with Liverpool since joining their youth academy at the age of six. He had already expressed his intention to leave the club this summer. Under his previous contract, he would have been able to leave Liverpool on a free transfer after 30 June.
Reports suggest that Real Madrid offered Liverpool around $11 million to facilitate Alexander-Arnold’s early move to the Spanish club.
During his time at Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold made 352 appearances, scoring 23 goals and providing 86 assists. He played a crucial role in the club’s success, helping them win two Premier League titles, a UEFA Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, the FA Cup, and the League Cup.
Earlier this month, Alexander-Arnold said he was motivated by a desire for a “new challenge” and to “push himself personally and professionally” in his next move.
At Real Madrid, he will join forces with England teammate Jude Bellingham and reunite with former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso, who recently took over as the club’s head coach after replacing Carlo Ancelotti. Real Madrid parted ways with Ancelotti following their first season without a major domestic or European title since 2020-21.
