ISLAMABAD:
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday paid glowing tribute to overseas Pakistanis, acknowledging their critical role in bolstering the national economy through remittances. He described their contributions as a reflection of deep-rooted trust, commitment, and a shared responsibility across generations.
In his message on the occasion of the International Day of Family Remittances, the premier said that the government remains committed to attracting foreign direct investment and broadening the country’s export base to achieve long-term economic stability.
Highlighting the significance of remittances, the PM noted that they continue to serve as a vital source of foreign exchange reserves and remain a cornerstone of the national economy. “With more than nine million Pakistanis living abroad—mainly in the Gulf, Europe, and North America—their bond with the homeland remains strong and unshakable,” he stated.
“Their financial support goes beyond familial obligations—it is a driving force behind Pakistan’s economic resilience,” he added.
The prime minister revealed that overseas Pakistanis sent a record $34.9 billion in remittances during the current fiscal year, registering a 28.8% increase over the previous year. In May 2025 alone, remittances stood at $3.7 billion, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 13.7%.
“These record-breaking numbers are not only a tribute to the tireless efforts and loyalty of our diaspora but also a sign of their growing confidence in the economic direction set by the government,” the prime minister said.
He emphasized that this trust reinforces the government’s determination to accelerate economic recovery and national development. “Let us reaffirm our commitment to working closely with our diaspora, development partners, and stakeholders to tackle economic challenges and pave the way for sustained investment and prosperity,” he concluded.
