Afghanistan Hails Diplomatic Upgrade with Pakistan

Kabul to elevate chargé d’affaires to ambassador level in Islamabad

Afghanistan has expressed its appreciation for Pakistan’s decision to enhance diplomatic ties with Kabul, confirming that it will reciprocate the move by upgrading its chargé d’affaires in Islamabad to the rank of ambassador, TOLOnews reported.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) – the name used by the Taliban-led government – stated that Islamabad’s decision to elevate its diplomatic representation in Kabul from chargé d’affaires to ambassador was a positive development.

“The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan will also reciprocate by upgrading its chargé d’affaires in Islamabad to ambassador,” said Zia Ahmad Takal, head of public relations at the Afghan foreign ministry.

He emphasized in a statement, shared via the ministry’s official “X” account, that this step would “pave the way for broader cooperation across multiple sectors.”

The announcement came a day after Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, following his second meeting with China’s foreign minister within ten days in Hong Kong, declared Islamabad’s decision to raise the level of its chargé d’affaires in Kabul to ambassador.

“Pakistan-Afghanistan relations are on a positive trajectory after my very productive visit to Kabul with the Pakistani delegation on April 19, 2025,” Dar said in a statement on Friday.

“To maintain this momentum, I am pleased to announce the Government of Pakistan’s decision to upgrade the chargé d’affaires in Kabul to ambassador,” he continued.

Dar expressed confidence that this move would “enhance engagement, deepen Pak-Afghan cooperation in economic, security, counterterrorism and trade areas, and promote further exchanges between the two brotherly countries.”

Afghan political analyst Sayed Moqaddam Amin welcomed Islamabad’s announcement, calling it “another positive step.”

“I hope this move, in light of the shared interests of both countries and through strengthening friendly ties, will help resolve existing challenges and foster stronger political and diplomatic relations between Kabul and Islamabad,” Amin told TOLOnews.
