The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to escalate, with United Nations agencies issuing urgent warnings about widespread hunger and the long-term effects of malnutrition, particularly on children.
The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has declared that the entire population of the Gaza Strip is at critical risk of famine due to nearly 19 months of ongoing conflict, mass displacement, and severe restrictions on humanitarian aid. In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), UNRWA stressed:
“The siege must be lifted to allow aid to reach those in need.”
Echoing these concerns, the World Health Organization (WHO) highlighted the alarming rise in malnutrition, warning of its permanent consequences for an entire generation. WHO’s representative for the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Rik Peeperkorn, reported seeing children in clinics who appeared significantly younger than their actual age, a sign of severe stunting and developmental delays.
“Without enough nutritious food, clean water, and access to health care, an entire generation will be permanently affected,” Peeperkorn said during a press briefing from Deir al-Balah. He warned that the ongoing crisis could lead to irreversible health problems, including poor physical development and impaired cognitive growth.
As the humanitarian situation deteriorates, UN agencies are urgently calling for unrestricted access to Gaza to deliver critical aid and prevent a looming catastrophe that could shape the future of an entire population.
