Pakistan Assumes UN Security Council Presidency for July

Ambassador vows inclusive, transparent leadership amid global instability

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan officially assumes the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) today, July 1, 2025, with Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad pledging a transparent, inclusive, and responsive approach during his one-month tenure at the helm of the world’s premier decision-making body for peace and security.

Speaking to APP at the UN headquarters, Ambassador Iftikhar reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to upholding multilateralism and international law while navigating a complex global environment marked by conflict, geopolitical friction, and humanitarian crises.

“Pakistan’s presidency will be transparent, inclusive, and responsive,” the envoy emphasized, outlining his vision for steering the 15-member body through a critical period.

This marks Pakistan’s eighth term on the Security Council—previously serving in 2012–13, 2003–04, 1993–94, 1983–84, 1976–77, 1968–69, and 1952–53—and is part of its current two-year tenure as a non-permanent member, which began in January 2025. The Council presidency rotates monthly among members in alphabetical order.

Prioritising Dialogue, Multilateralism, and Regional Partnerships

During its July presidency, Pakistan will host two high-level signature events: one focused on strengthening multilateralism and the peaceful resolution of disputes, and another on enhancing cooperation between the UN and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

“These priorities reflect Pakistan’s enduring emphasis on preventive diplomacy and partnerships with regional organizations to advance global peace and security,” Ambassador Iftikhar said.

He added that Pakistan’s leadership will also maintain focus on major global developments, including ongoing crises in the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America.

Engagement with UN Leadership and Member States

Ambassador Iftikhar has already met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to present the Council’s programme of work for July.

“Pakistan brings to the Security Council a principled, balanced approach informed by decades of experience in conflict resolution and its longstanding contributions to UN peacekeeping,” he said.

He reiterated Pakistan’s readiness to work closely with all Council members to ensure timely, coordinated action aligned with the Council’s mandate under the UN Charter.

Strong Mandate from the UN General Assembly

Pakistan was elected to the Security Council in 2024 with overwhelming support—securing 182 out of 193 votes in the General Assembly—underscoring broad international confidence in Islamabad’s diplomatic credentials.

“We look forward to constructive engagement and collective progress on the Council’s critical responsibilities,” the ambassador concluded.

As tensions simmer across various global regions, Pakistan’s stewardship of the UNSC in July will be closely watched for its ability to foster dialogue, de-escalation, and cooperation at a time of unprecedented international volatility.
