ISLAMABAD, May 9 — The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Friday announced the indefinite suspension of the remaining matches of the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) X, citing heightened security concerns following escalating cross-border tensions with India.
The decision came just hours after the PCB had declared plans to relocate the league’s final eight matches to the United Arab Emirates. However, a rapid deterioration in the security situation, including reported Indian drone incursions and missile strikes, prompted the board to halt the tournament altogether.
In a formal statement, the PCB said the suspension was made on the direct advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who stressed that the country’s focus must remain on supporting the armed forces defending Pakistan’s sovereignty.
“In such challenging times, while cricket is a powerful symbol of unity, it must take a respectful pause,” the board said.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi condemned what he called “extremely irresponsible and dangerous acts” by India, specifically referencing the targeting of Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. He emphasized that the PCB’s top priority is the safety and mental well-being of domestic and international players.
The now-postponed fixtures included: Karachi Kings vs. Peshawar Zalmi, Peshawar Zalmi vs. Lahore Qalandars, Islamabad United vs. Karachi Kings, Multan Sultans vs. Quetta Gladiators, and the playoff stages, including the final.
The PCB expressed solidarity with the families of fallen security personnel and affected civilians, extending gratitude to franchises, players, sponsors, broadcasters, and fans for their understanding and continued support. The board also acknowledged the emotional strain on foreign players and assured that their safe return would be facilitated.
The suspension of PSL X, one of Pakistan’s premier sporting events, underscores the gravity of the current regional crisis and reflects the country’s broader prioritization of national security.
