Punjab Braces for Heavy Rain on Ashura Amid Monsoon Surge

As Punjab enters a fresh wave of monsoon activity, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast heavy rainfall across the province, particularly on Ashura (10th Muharram). The warning includes Lahore and key districts such as Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Sargodha, and Faisalabad, where intense downpours are expected.

Monsoon System May Persist Till July 10

Meteorologists believe this active monsoon phase may extend through July 10, with the potential to significantly raise water levels in rivers and streams, heightening the risk of flooding in vulnerable areas.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued alerts and mobilised emergency response units, including Rescue 1122 and the Disaster Response Force, urging citizens to remain vigilant and to call the PDMA helpline (1129) in emergencies.

Weather Update for Lahore

After a hot, humid day, Lahore is expected to receive heavy showers accompanied by thunder and lightning late into the night. Temperatures in the city will likely fluctuate between 30°C and 37°C. With rain expected to vary from light to heavy across Punjab, strong winds and persistent showers are predicted in the coming days.

Concerns Over Urban Infrastructure

Amid these forecasts, Lahore residents are raising concerns over delayed infrastructure projects. Many fear that incomplete drainage and road works could lead to serious disruptions and urban flooding during this critical monsoon stretch.

Rain Emergency Declared in Twin Cities

Overnight rainfall in Rawalpindi and Islamabad led to a rain emergency being declared by the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA). Low-lying areas remain at risk of water accumulation as Saidpur recorded the highest downpour at 80 mm, followed by 40 mm at the PMD office, 20 mm in Shamsabad, and 15 mm in Pirwadhai.

Nationwide Impact: 64 Dead, Over 100 Injured

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has confirmed that 64 people have lost their lives and 117 others have been injured due to flash floods and heavy rain nationwide in just the past week. The province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been the worst hit, reporting 23 fatalities, including 10 children. Punjab has seen 21 deaths, while Sindh and Balochistan have reported 15 and 5 casualties, respectively.

Final Word

With religious processions and large gatherings expected on Ashura, the timing of the heavy rain forecast is particularly concerning. Authorities are on high alert, but much depends on public cooperation and infrastructural readiness in the face of this unpredictable monsoon.
