Saud Shakeel Likely to Be Named Test Captain

Sarfaraz Ahmed in Contention for Chief Selector Role

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is preparing to implement significant changes to the national cricket structure in the coming week. These potential reforms include a new Test captain, the appointment of a chief selector, and the hiring of a red-ball head coach.

According to insider sources, middle-order batter and current vice-captain Saud Shakeel is the leading candidate to replace Shan Masood as Test captain for the upcoming home series against South Africa in October 2025. The series will feature two Tests, three ODIs, and three T20Is.

Though an official announcement is pending, sources indicate the decision to appoint Saud is nearly finalized as part of a broader strategy to restructure Pakistan’s red-ball setup.

Shan Masood, who took over the Test captaincy in November 2023, has faced criticism for inconsistent performances. Under his leadership, Pakistan managed only three wins in 12 Tests, suffering nine defeats. Their performance in the 2023–25 ICC World Test Championship has been underwhelming, with the team sitting at the bottom of the table.

The team endured Test series whitewashes against Australia, Bangladesh, and South Africa, with victories only against Sri Lanka and England, and a drawn series against the West Indies. Shan’s tactical decisions and leadership have come under scrutiny during this period.

In contrast, Saud Shakeel has proven to be one of Pakistan’s most consistent performers in the format, averaging over 50 since his debut. His temperament, reliability, and calm leadership have impressed PCB officials. His captaincy in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 for the Quetta Gladiators, who topped the table with six wins in nine matches, has further strengthened his case.

Sarfaraz Ahmed Tipped for Chief Selector Role

In another major move, the PCB is reportedly considering Sarfaraz Ahmed, former national captain, for the position of Chief Selector. This comes amid a broader overhaul of team management and structure.

Following a recent performance review conducted by PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, several mentors were relieved of their duties, paving the way for new appointments. Although the PCB has not issued an official confirmation, an announcement is expected soon.

Sarfaraz, who last played Test cricket for Pakistan in 2023, has had a distinguished international career and is best remembered for leading the team to the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy title. After a short stint in a mentorship role — now discontinued — Sarfaraz is being considered for a more strategic position in team development and selection. His familiarity with the current player pool and in-depth knowledge of domestic talent make him a strong candidate.

Misbah-ul-Haq in Line for Red-Ball Coaching Role

Former captain Misbah-ul-Haq is also being considered to return as head coach of the Test team. Misbah previously served in dual roles as head coach and chief selector between 2019 and 2021. He is among the frontrunners to guide Pakistan’s red-ball side moving forward.

While the PCB is reportedly laying the groundwork for future Test assignments, the red-ball head coach position remains open for now, with several candidates still under evaluation.

Meanwhile, Mike Hesson, former New Zealand captain, has recently been appointed as the new white-ball head coach for Pakistan.
