PDMA and NDMA issue flood alerts; residents in low-lying areas urged to evacuate
Amid rising water levels at Tarbela Dam, authorities on Saturday opened its spillways to manage the increasing inflow, prompting the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) to issue a flood alert for communities along the Indus River.
According to the PDMA, the release is expected to raise Indus River discharge levels to between 260,000 and 270,000 cusecs, significantly increasing the risk of flooding in nearby low-lying regions.
District administrations have been directed to stay on high alert and monitor vulnerable communities closely. The PDMA specifically advised fishermen, livestock herders, and residents living along the riverbanks to relocate to safer areas immediately.
Officials warned that the swelling river could trigger flood-like conditions, urging the public to remain vigilant and to contact emergency helpline 1700 in case of any incidents.
Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Irfanullah Mehsud confirmed that the spillways were opened at 12:30 PM on Saturday and issued a public advisory warning residents to avoid the riverbanks. A special appeal was made to inhabitants of Kund, Khairabad, Jabi Mandori, Shuangi, Mamakhel, Kahi, and surrounding areas to stay clear of the river for their own safety.
NDMA Issues Rain-Linked Flood Forecast
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) also issued a weather-related flood advisory, predicting increased water flows in several rivers due to expected rainfall from July 13 to 14.
A low-level flood is forecast for the River Kabul at Nowshera, while rising water levels are also expected in the Swat River, Panjkora River, and nearby nullahs.
Communities in these regions have been urged to take precautionary measures, avoid crossing water channels during rains, and stay informed via the NDMA disaster management app.
Authorities continue to coordinate efforts to prevent loss of life and property as the monsoon intensifies.
